Being compassionate to animals and simultaneously consuming them didn’t seem right for Jonathan Balcombe. This was what urged the author, scientist, and speaker to switch to veganism.
Who is Jonathan Balcombe?
As a young man, Jonathan had always adored animals.
During his college years, he naturally veered towards taking up biology as his undergraduate major. After finishing his degree, he took some time off from his studies and spent 3 months in India. It was during this trip when he made the decision to become a vegetarian.
“Looking back, I was always a vegan waiting to happen,” Jonathan says. Five years after becoming a vegetarian, he happily chose the vegan life. He wanted to go the extra mile and exclude all animal-derived products from his lifestyle. And while converting to plant-based living can be difficult for others, Jonathan says that it is second-nature to him.
With his love for animals and his expertise in natural sciences, Jonathan is now a PhD holder in ethology (the study of animal behavior). He also wrote four science books on the inner lives of animals. These titles include Pleasurable Kingdom, Second Nature, The Exultant Ark, and New York Times bestseller What a Fish Knows. Additionally, he has published over 60 scientific papers on animal behavior and protection.
His work on animal behavior extends beyond published materials as well. Jonathan was the former Department Chair for Animal Studies with the Humane Society University. He was the Director of Animal Sentience with The Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy. He also teaches a course in animal sentience for the Viridis Graduate Institute.
Today, Jonathan wants to help aspiring authors hone their potentials by offering private consultations on nonfiction book writing. He also provides lectures on animal behavior, and some of his avid fans are the Antarctic penguins who eagerly wait for his arrival.
Why are vegan writers important?
Veganism is more than eating a plant-based diet and refusing animal-derived products. It is also about compassion for animals. While it is true that compassion is innate, it can also be learned and enhanced.
Vegan writers are important in nurturing compassion for animals, especially in children. Writing books, articles, and magazines on animal welfare and liberation can help cultivate this compassion. Whether it is through fiction, non-fiction, or graphic stories, vegan writers help in deepening the empathy and kindness in everyone.
Informative materials on veganism are also essential, which is why vegan writers are important in our society. Educating people and spreading awareness can help correct some misconceptions about veganism. It will also encourage others to adopt a cruelty-free and sustainable lifestyle.
